Description

A thing for quidamity.deviantart.com/journ… and contest-office.deviantart.com/…

I drew a thing, submitted a thing, and shall now enter that thing into this contest thing! Because that was what it was all about. Drawing something.
:)
That was a fantastic contest prompt. This fellow is an alien merman, probably a scout or hunter of some variety. It's been way too long since I drew a mer, so this was a great excuse to try one in a new, different direction.

Earth is not the only planet on which the legend of mermaids and their men exist. Even in the waters of other worlds, lurking deep and secret as the depths of space, there exist beings belonging to mythology, riding their alien steeds and doing their alien deeds.

...Now does this belong in a fantasy or a sci-fi category? :}

You get a free critique as part of entering the contest, if you're not interested in a critique, then simply ignore this next bit!

I really like this piece, the use of colors helps set the mood of where it's taking place, and the line work is crisp. Technically speaking it's a solid piece, but where it really signs is the originality. Granted, merpeople of any variety aren't exactly an original concept, but alien merfolk riding on what looks like a cross between a seahorse and a beta fish is certainly different compared to what I've come across! The shading is solid and the transparency in the fins is a nice subtle touch.

The only suggestion I really have for this piece is that if the background was a little more defined - so you could tell easily if that's giant stalks of seaweed or coral or rock - it would really pop. (I'd go with seaweed or coral just to be able to splash some different colors in there, even if they're muted).
